When you send your kids off to college you likely need to rent a small trailer in order to transport everything they need. Their furniture, belongings and many other items needed to fill up their dorm room, can take up too much space for your car. The kick is during several times a year when the dorms close and you have to move the student back home, lugging all of that stuff back with them.

Abandoned self-storage units are gaining a reputation of being the place to go to find left-behind or forgotten treasures. Television shows have shown that many expensive items are sometimes left behind when owners move or pass away and the owners of the storage facility auction the items left behind as a means of recovering their loss from unpaid rent.

Not all abandoned storage units contain expensive items, but some may contain merchandise that can be used by others or sold by other means. Nearly every community has storage facilities and when rent for a locker goes unpaid the facility owner can file a lien against the renter and, after the time established by the state’s law, can auction off the contents to recover the lost rent and retake ownership of the unit.
